Duren’s Wants/Needs list [last updated 10-9-09]
What I mostly want is TIME. Solvi takes up LOTS of time and I have to work to feed us, leaving about 1-2 hours per weekday for me (or Zig or Ed) to do ANYthing else, and on Weekends Zig and Ed would like to get things done TOO. I’ve got a PILE of things I want to do, and no time to do them in.
I no longer need toys or cute things or heaven help us – knick knacks (we’re full up here). Buy cool things for Solvi and Zig and I (and even Ed) will play with them!
- Services:
- Help for my hair: A professional cut, color and deep condition [from a salon that will LISTEN]
- My new back doors painted on both sides and the trim/frame sealed/painted [nope haven't bought supplies yet] Dad has offered to do this (thanks, tho Martha).
- Help child-proofing the house- requres someone good with screwdriver/drill AND PATIENCE – took me an HOUR to baby proof one set of cupboard doors [drawers, cupboard, door handle, tall shelf anti-tip, etc.]
- Help installing… new front door lock, knife rack, and some various plumbing and electrical tasks around the house. I have a list…)
- Child Entertainment services: We could really use someone to commit to come over several times to entertain her while we get longer house projects done [like clean my office, or clean her carpet, sort old house stuff, etc.] Kay is not working out for us.
- Lawn mowing/raking services – it is cheaper to pay a babysitter to watch Solvi than to pay someone to mow my lawn for the equivalent amount of time! Gad!
- Books:
- Historical Mystery books - Used, I really like those set in Medieval times – I have read ALL off the Caedfels – so not those.
- “new” little House books:
- (About Caroline Wilder – Laura’s mom) Across the Rolling River, Little City by the Lake, A Little House of Their Own
- (About Rose Wilder – Laura’s daughter) Little Farm in the Ozarks, In the Land of the Big Red Apple, On the Other Side of the Hill, Little Town in the Ozarks, New Dawn on Rocky Ridge, On the Banks of the Bayou, Bachelor Girl, Young pioneers (by Rose herself)
- McKay’s, Amazon or ABE books Gift certificates - FOR ME
- Power Converter for car – plugs into ciggarette lighter, allows any THREE PRONG device to plug in and recharge.
- Help funding a 2nd pair of glasses: new lenses in old frames and clean-up refurbishment of old frames.
- Clothes: What I really need is a wholesale wardrobe overhaul – most of what is in there is over 10 years old…and I need at least 2 more pairs of jeans/everyday work slacks.
- My Black Winter Wool coat cleaned
- Bras – sigh, I lost 4 in the fire (mostly old ones, but STILL).
- Navy & black trouser socks – Knee high, thicker rather than thinner, ROBUST elastic (queen/XL size if such a thing exists?)
- Expensive, cushy WOMEN’s athletic socks (like from runner’s market) I wear a size 8-9 in shoes. I like black, grey, – even colors other than pastels/day-glo.
- New inserts for my SAS shoes - Supposedly available, try the store in town near West Town Mall (Across from Borders)
- A Land’s End gift certificate would be nice for new clothes – I also generally shop at JC Penny’s, although Dress Barn had some pleasing stuff recently…
- House Stuff:
- A new good hand can opener
- Good, not too thick potholders – solid colors/geometric prints – small square ones
- Good saucepans approx -5 total: one 1-qt pot, two 2.5-3 qt pots, and two 1.5-2qt pots. I prefer copper bottomed, but anything SOLID, not cast iron or aluminum will do. Prefer NOT non-stick as we don’t seem to be able to take care of those. We have TWO good (copperbottomed) saucepans – a 4qt and a 1qt. The rest are REALLY sad.
- Bathmats – large, warm, soft, fuzzy and seriously washable – Black, white, dark green, grey (the rubber backed ones fall apart if you wash them much…but the ones without rubber backing slip, so…?)
- A new toaster oven - dimensions (cannot be bigger than) 15″ w x13″d x 15″h- simple oven/toast functions are all we need, should be able to hold 4 slices of standard loaf bread.
- New Carport - Portable garage/carport (mtal frame with bungied tarp over it)
- A new Chest of drawers for our bedroom
- Tall thin knick-knack cabinet (with cupboards at the bottom for the living room.
- 12 x12xat least 7′ Storage shed for the lawn mower, weed whacker, gasoline and my “war” SCA stuff (includes 11′ wooden ridge poles)
- Computer Stuff
- External USB Storage Drive -for long-term storage of Solvi pics & videos
- SCA Stuff
- New tent – 10×10 Anglo Saxon wedge from Panther Primitives with sod cloth in 10 oz sunforger with flame retardant – no poles or stakes needed
- New Bed/platform for 2 adults (or adult plus Solvi)
- Movies:
- Cars – Pixar
- Igor
- Greatest American Hero season one collection – DVD
- Beatles Yellow Submarine movie
- Hair
- Heavy Metal
- Tout La Matins du Monde
- Mama Mia
- Star Trek XI
- Indiana Jones & the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

- medium dark chocolate (THIN bars)
- Rasberry Jells or chocolate cordials from Chocolate factory
- healthy snacks for the office so I don’t eat junk
- A kitty of my own, but not yet – Solvi isn’t old enough for a small defenseless kitten yet…
[...] anyway – in response to several polite and not-so polite requests, here’s a birthday list of sorts. I’ll try to add the books this weekend, but a McKays gift certificate is always a good [...]
I could come over and paint the doors. I have brushes, you buy the paint.
