As always, please avoid Pink (small pink bits, decorations and parts are fine, no large swaths of pink, fuschia, etc. If your first thought upon looking at it is “mmm, pink” it’s a no go please.) And I have found myself unuimpressed with excesses of glitter/glitz.
And please avoid stuffed animals – she has LOTS already and more in the closet just needing to be cleaned (you could committ to come over and help clean them as a gift…)
Note on battery operated musical, educational toys – She likes these – for about a week or so and then quickly gets bored with them. Don’t spend a lot of money on them…
- BOOKS:
- Dr Suess Books: One Fish Two Fish…, Wet Pet, Dry Pet…, The Eye Book (we already have ALL those NOT listed here)
- Sandra Boynton Board Books: Bath Time, Doggies, Fuzzy Fuzzy Fuzzy (we already have ALL those NOT listed here)
- Other Board Books (BB): Skippy John Jones – Colors, Mouse Count, 5 Little Monkeys Jumping…, any Richard Scarry BB, Corduroy (any), Button Nose, any truck/car book – USED is fine!!!
- “regular books” – where the text is about 1-2 lines per page, and the pictures change a lot from page to page (there is something new going on in each page, and it is clear what is going on). Where the Wild Things Are, for example, dosn’t interest her yet. She’d like Llama Llama Misses Mama, and anything interesting and cool you find. Better to buy too old than too young at this point.
- Videos: DVDs please, used OK in many cases
- Madagascar
- Madagascar 2
- Kung Fu Panda: Secrets of the Furious Five
- Curious George
- The Fox and the Hound
- The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh
- Piglet’s Big Movie
- TV/Children’s Videos
- Any Elmo except: Elmo’s world with teeth, & getting dressed. She also likes Ernie and Cookie Monster
- Sesame Street Old School Vol 1
- Sesame street old School Vol 2
- Toys:
- Art stuff: She has LOTS of crayons, but loves markers (with predictable results)
- colored *thin* high-quality chalk,
- erasable pens (she wants to write with *our* pens)
- fat, soft lead pencils
- Book of (fun) US postage stamps and some envelopes so she can mail ‘letters’/pictures this year!
- She likely could use an art easel soon (I have a floor mat and smocks), and paints and brushes, etc.
- Puzzles - thick wooden or plastic pieces, one-to-one matching stule right now (even 1-2 piece thick cardboard puzzles frustrate her right now, but later I suspect she’ll love them….) be creative – she likes other “stuff ” she can assemble and disassemble. A Name Puzzle would be really COOL.
- Her parents like the stuff on this web site a LOT, especially the wooden toys…
- small pots and pats (1-2 cups size?) plastic or metal or wood – that she can “cook” her cutable fruit in.
- Classic Toys: Raggedy Ann/Andy, Wooden lincoln logs, Hammer bench, Jumping Balls.
- A stroller and crib/bed for her dolls (not pink please) – also doll clothes – for 12″ long baby dolls (she has 2 soft/stuffed ones and one all plastic one).
- Otherwise – Inexpensive, she likes novelty, so we hide stuff for a while and then give it to her roughly one or two new “things” every week or so. She likes things she can open to discover what’s in them (plastic easter eggs are STILL a hit). We like things without batteries, please. Not sure what’s appropriate? Try this list: http://www.keepkidshealthy.com/toddler/toys_young_toddlers.html
- Art stuff: She has LOTS of crayons, but loves markers (with predictable results)
- Clothes: Size 24 months – 2T (she has a lot of 3T and bigger hand me down clothes). Please avoid commercial characters as the daily choosing her clothes process is already a struggle!
If you buy new, please keep receipt as manufacturers’ size is highly variable – and may be too small or WAY too big. SHOP in the boys section too (Solvi likes dinosaurs/monsters, construction equipment, ALL animals, etc. as well as flowers, butterflies, and stars/glitter)
- long sleeve shirts: like 10-14 of them! Pull overs, ‘tunics,’ and button downs (NO snaps at crotch type!) in colors/patterns that match/compliment solid color pants – at least 3 plain white pullovers please. (She already has LOTS of pants/overalls – blue jean, black, red, kahki, grey & brown)
- Pajamas – long sleeve, long leg, medium weight, one piece with feet preferred, 2-pieces and/or no feet OK, she needs 2-4 sets to get through the winter.
- 2 full slips or long undershirts for wearing under dresses - red, black
- Water resistant winter coat – she has 2 thermal jackets, a thick sweater, and a sweatshirt, as well as a raincoat and 2 light jackets for fall/winter. She has a very nice snowsuit already.
- We are OK on dresses for now, we have a nice christmas/holiday dress, and some good jumpers for winter (need some nice white/solid color shirts to wear under, see above), but we DO need SCA/medieval clothes!
- Good clear pictures of relatives’ faces - face in the pic should be roughly 2-3″ in size, we would like to make a “Family” Board Book we can “read” to her. (STILL NEED THESE from Ed’s family, and one of Aunt Jo)
- Travel Tray for her car seat - This one is our preference.
- Pullup diapers for a kid around 30 lbs (potty training this year!)
- Grandma Partch Sewing expertise – mom has a sewing project she would like help with – parts and pattern provided, what I don’t have is time! (monster blanket/suit)
- Bath Stuff:
- Bathtub mat at least 30″ long (they sell Elmo ones!)
- Kid towels - Solvi likes brightly colored towels with recognizable things/creatures on them. Soft, absorbent, not huge, etc.
- Music – heaven help us she is almost ready for karaoke, something that will amplify or record her voice would be neat – as long as it is pretty toddler proof.
- An analog clock for her room that can be read at night, but doesn’t light up the whole room.
- Furniture
- Two small armless chairs, folding OK, (she has a table and 2 chairs, but needs more for her dolls/animals to have tea with her)
- one or two STURDY low stools for her parents sit on to join her at tea
- A toy box (once she is reasonably potty trained – and changing table is gone)
